How We Met

Welcome to this week’s post.

We could have met four years earlier.  I was in Montreal visiting my brother and sister in law and Yannick was still playing for the Canadiens.  I was 18 and irresponsible, he was 21 and in a relationship.  The timing wouldn’t have been right.

Fast forward to 2014 in Sochi, Russia.  My parents and I had been talking with a couple from Switzerland who were in Russia to watch their son play hockey.  My brother wasn’t playing a game so he was in the family/players lounge, sitting with our family and the Swiss family.  Yannick walks in after his game, sees his parents sitting with us and sees Carey standing there and comes over to chat and we were introduced.

I saw I had a message from someone after the gold medal game while I was sitting in the airport waiting for our connection flight.  It was Yannick.  After he congratulated me and our family on the gold medal, he continued conversation.  I thought this guy was 32 and married with kids.  After a discussion with my best friend and a quick google search, I found out that I was mistaken and he and I made a plan to go for a hike that weekend in Vancouver where he was playing at the time.

I drove 3 1/2 hours to see him from my university town of Kamloops.  I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into or if this was something that was going to be worth it.  I had a mid term the following Monday and debated wether or not I should stay home and study.    I’m glad I didn’t.

We meet outside of the place I was staying and I knew I was in trouble.  I tried to play it cool the whole time we were in the mountains and Yannick thought I wasn’t interested because I walked two steps ahead of him the whole time.

We went for a quick dinner after our hike and ended up talking for hours.  It was great, it was fantastic, it literally made us sick.  Not only did I leave that night feeling excited, I left with food poisoning.  We both got food poisoning.  Worth it.

I ended up texting my brother after that night asking him wether or not Yannick was a good guy.  Carey and Yannick had been room mates on the road when they were both in Montreal, and being my brother, I figured he’d be honest with his opinions.  And he was. He said that Yannick was one of the good guys, and I couldn’t agree more.

Thanks for reading! I know it’s a bit boring but I had a few people asking how we met so I thought I’d share.

I’ll see you on Saturday.

Sincerely,

Kayla Price
